Ketcher is an open-source molecule editor used by chemists and researchers. As an outsourced design partner for EPAM, we spent six months making it easier to use: new selection tools, hover states, tooltips and other interactions, plus new components for its design system.

Challenge

Ketcher serves a highly specialised audience with demanding technical needs. The work meant balancing those needs with simple, intuitive interactions, while collaborating daily with another designer in a different country, the stakeholders and the development team.

Approach

We worked closely with stakeholders to understand requirements and user needs, prototyped responsive interactions and designed new components such as hovers and tooltips. Daily work with the developers kept the handoff smooth and feedback quick.

Result

A more usable Ketcher: scientists and researchers can find and use its tools more easily, and the design system is more complete and consistent.
